What is BIATHLON?
Biathlon is a combination of cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship. Biathlon has evolved in Scandinavia from times when hunters and warriors needed to go around on skis in a winter time and were using arms (bow and arrows at first) to hunt and to protect themselves. Biathlon is one of the oldest Olympic Winter Sports. For detailed description click here!

After first few days full of unexpected situations, we have got finally the first competition day behind us. The skiing on soft, dirty trails was very hard for everybody, so the results were mostly impacted by not quite accurate competition timing and the shooting. Congratulations to Scott, Paul and Jodi Miller for finishing in the top 10!
The training on Friday could be cancelled because of rain, which will give us more time to give you some updates from Quebec.

The first day of the Biathlon WCH 09 is over. It has not been much fun for the Canadian athletes, because the best performer of the day was Zina Kocher in 30th place. J-P LeGuellec was the best Canadian man in 43th, while Robin Clegg is the last Canadian to make Pursuit competition on Sunday with 49th. Hopefully our athletes wil step up their performance in next few days, otherwise it is quite possible that we will be cheering only for one male and one female athlete at the Olympics 2010. IBU is alocating starting positions to NSOs based on combined results from WCh 08 and 09. Our Scot Perras, currently under the coaching of the NT coaches, finished as last Canadian in 83rd (out of 120 athletes).

World Youth / Junior Championships
The first competition (Individual) here in Canmore is behind us. Despite difficult shooting conditions due to strong Chinook winds, we have noticed some very interesting results. In the Youth Men, Kurtis Wenzel of RMR was able able to finish in fifth, while Yolaine Oddou (QC) finished third in the Youth Women category. Our own Jessica Sedlock was top Canadian Junior Woman in 20th, while Canmore's Sarah Murphy, recently competing for New Zealand, finished in great 14th. The U.S team, also with our support, has won silver medal in the Youth Women (Grace Boutot).

On the women's side, Zina Kocher from Red Deer has shown another consistent result and took few more points for overall standings.

World Cup 2 - Hocfilzen:
J-P LeGuellec is on the roll. Again!
After great results in WC #1 in Sweden, J-P has posted another top 20 (17th place) in the Sprint Competition during WC#2 in Austria. Congratulations!
We are proud of Scott Perras, who despite poor shooting performance has managed to finish as second best Canadian in 43th. He has another Pursuit Competition on the way and we can just hope that finally it could be top 40? Not bad for flat-lander!
Canadian women are struggling at the beginning of this season. Today is the best Zina Kocher, who thanks to her very fast last lap managed to finish in 52nd. She has made almost twenty places after leaving the shooting range!
Full result service and Biathlonblog updates are coming soon. Stay tuned!

After long months of dry land training, our athletes are delighted to be back on skis and real snow. Starting last Monday, we have been able to find ideal training conditions at Silver Star Mountain resort in BC. Along with XC skiers from Canadian National Team and few other teams from Alberta, we have been skiing on 15-20 km of perfectly groomed trails.

On March 9th, there had been an article posted on our Biathlon Blog. Naming it “On the road to excellence! Are we?”, we have tried to imagine, what else could be done wrong to the Canadian biathlon system. Believe it or not, current situation is almost exactly matching all of our worries, even exceeding our nightmares in many directions!
